CAPE TOWN TRAINS RESCUED BY NEW BACK-UP GENERATOR SYSTEM

Wednesday, June 3, 2009

As hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected to
make use of South Africa's train systems during the 2010 FIFA World
Cup, essential power supply has been made a priority with top generator
specialists ensuring that Cape Town's train station has a reliable
back-up generator system.

Leading generator supplier, Superwatt, has recently conducted a
complete overhaul of the station's back-up electricity supply, in order
to ensure that the process of transporting visitors and locals runs
smoothly at all times.

The new generator system provides a solution towards the load shedding
periods during winter as well as during the 2010 FIFA World Cup when
South Africa's power supply will be stretched to its limits.

Pierre Cronje, Project Manager of the station upgrade explained, "The
overhaul and additional generation units took Cape Town Station from
only emergency lights on during a blackout to being fully operational
during a power outage." This further ensures that the station's
functionality is never interrupted.

Superwatt supplied cutting-edge generators, one which offers superior
noise management through the construction of a sound-proof generator
room and casing because of its proximity to a public area. The company
also refurbished an existing generator and reinstalled the entire
system.

One particular innovation that Superwatt provided during the
installation is the ability for the generators to reduce the load on
the mains consumption by co-generation. Patrick Gaertner of Superwatt
commented, "This is a useful tool during peak demand control, but is an
aspect that must be approved by authorities."

Cronje pointed out that electrical supply at the station at all times
is expected and taken for granted. With the installation of the
generators at the Cape Town Station, it is another step closer to being
a world class facility.
